The Ben Thanh Market is one of Ho Chi Minh city’s famous landmarks. The market is huge, difficult to get around and is best avoided during peak hours.  Around the perimeter of the Ben Thanh market are numerous shops, restaurants and spas that makes the place a lively place to be at.

What can be found at Ben Thanh Market?

There’s a wet market section and one where cooked food are sold, very similar to the wet markets and hawker centres that we find in Singapore.  It’s definitely worth a look, but the part that we were interested in was the retail section where local handicrafts, textiles, souvenirs, clothing, shoes, bags and accessories were sold.

Note however that Ben Thanh Market is not one where the locals will go to - it has become much more of a tourist trap over the years.  Things over here tend not to be labelled with prices and have been marked up several times.  If you are keen on buying anything,  compare prices across a few stalls before you launch into a negotiation.

Even so, In terms of pricing and quality, the best place to shop would still be the Saigon Central Post Office as advised by our local guide during our half day tour of the city.  Therefore, we viewed the Ben Thanh Market as a place to experience a Vietnamese market rather than as a shopping destination.

How to Get to Ben Thanh Market?

Ben Thanh Market is located in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh city.   If you are staying near the market, the best way to get there would be to walk.  Otherwise, most taxi drivers would be familiar with the place and a taxi or Grab Car is relatively cheap here in Ho Chi Minh city.
